The Flash Road -

scenes from the building of the

great ocean road

Gregory Day

The road the men built was not

officially opened until 1932.

Originally it was to be called

the Anzac Highway but we know it

today as the Great Ocean Road.

As early as the 1950's however

it had acquired a local nicknme:

The Flash Road.

During the years of its

construction many others joined

the returned Anzacs in their

camps of 'canvas villas' along

the road: local men, susso

workers of the Great Depression,

and others who travelled from

various parts of Victoria just

for the work. This album of

imagined songs was inspired by

the SHEER POETRY of thier

achievement.
